What can I do to fix my furnace?

Not all heating problems require repairs or maintenance to correct.. There are a few minor issues that can be solved with just a few minutes of your time.

  • Thermostat: If your home is not comfortable, check your thermostat before anything else. Make sure the furnace has not been turned off or the temperature set too low by accident. If the thermostat reads that your home is at the correct desired temperature, try setting it a few degrees warmer and see if the furnace responds.  Some thermostats have batteries that may need to be changed.  Look at the screen of your thermostat, there maybe a battery indicator showing the batteries maybe bad.  Proceed with the manufactures directions to replace the batteries in your thermostat.

  • Pilot Light: If your gas, or LP furnace is not working, then the pilot light may be out. The furnace won’t be able to heat your home if the light goes out, so follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the proper procedure for lighting the pilot if necessary. If you have a problem lighting the pilot the pilot tubes may be clogged.  This is a task better left to a trained professional to resolve, so you may need to schedule emergency heater maintenance to get it working again.

  • Power: If your furnace refuses to turn on and it just seems to show no signs of life the problem maybe in the power to the furnace. Check your main service panel for a flipped breaker or broken fuse. A temporary surge or overload may have knocked the circuit offline. If you find it is a tripped breaker reset it.  If the furnace continues tripping the breaker during normal operations, then leave the breaker off and call a professional.  It could be a sign of a dangerous malfunction.
